A View from the Bridge represents a world in which legal, moral, ethical, and social issues are in conflict with one another. ![]() But when his niece begins to fall in love with one of them, Eddie grows increasingly suspicious, eventually precipitating his violation of the moral and cultural codes of his community and leading to the play's tragic finale. When his wife's cousins arrive as illegal immigrants from Italy, he is honoured to take them into his house. A View from the Bridge has its roots in the late 1940s when Miller became interested in the work and lives of the communities of dockworkers and longshoremen of New Yorks Brooklyn harbour and where he had himself previously worked. Set among Italian-Americans on the Brooklyn waterfront, A View from the Bridge is the story of longshoreman Eddie Carbone. The setting of A View from the Bridge is the Red Hook section of Brooklyn, facing seaward from the Brooklyn Bridge, a section which Miller intimately knows. When the law is wrong it's because it's unnatural, but in this case it is natural and a river will drown you if you buck it now. The law is only a word for what has a right to happen. ![]()
